Stay with Us

We have two locations in West Africa. Since 2009, The Sleeping Camel has welcomed travellers of all stripes in Bamako, Mali. It is still open, but we advise against overland travel to/from Mali and we sadly cannot recommend visiting many of the country’s most well known tourist sites at the moment.

The Sleeping Camel in Senegal

In December 2025, we launched the The Sleeping Camel in Senegal. It is a base for our scooter trips, but also a gathering place for travellers and locals alike. We have 6 rooms to start with and we have plenty of space for tents and hammocks. We also can accommodate cars, motos, and trucks of all sizes.

While we only started the guesthouse in December 2025, we have been living in La Somone since 2023, making friends and getting to know this unique town on the Petite-Cote of Senegal. There is something for everyone here and we would love to show you around. And whether you are heading north or south, we would love to sit down and look at a few maps with you. We have quite a few recommendations we can make when it comes to travel in the region.

For more info, check the Sleeping Camel Senegal website here.

Can you still visit Mali?

For those travellers that want to fly into Bamako and visit the city and the immediate surrounding area, we are happy to help you organize your trip. We still believe it is perfectly safe to visit Bamako and there is plenty to see and do, from visiting the Grand Marché to catching some exceptional live music to hiking to waterfalls.

We will not, however, organize trips to Timbuktu, Mopti, and/or Djenne (or anywhere else in the country for that matter). As of this writing (December 2025), it is simply too risky to visit many parts of Mali despite what some well-meaning guides and fellow travellers may tell you. We have spent a good part of the past 15 years doing our best to share Mali’s immense cultural wealth with anyone that will listen. We will be the first ones encouraging you to travel the country when it is safe to do so.
