Frequently Asked Questions

Be sure to also read the About You page. If your question isn’t answered in the FAQ or in the Trip Planning section, please get in touch.

Can anyone go on these trips?

As we stated on the About You page: We have no age limits. You need to have a driver’s license. You need to be in decent physical shape. We do not spend long days in the saddle but we are riding scooters and at times camping in the bush.

You don’t need to be training for a triathlon and you certainly don’t need to be an expert motorcyclist, but you need to be in decent physical shape with some motorbike/scooter/moped experience.

Most importantly, you need to be someone that is patient, open to discovery and willing to respect the people and cultures we will come across.

Can I join a trip after it has already started?

If you already find yourself in this region of West Africa, and you want to join a trip after it has already started, we may be able to accommodate you if we have a spot available. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Do I have to return to Dakar at the end of the trip?

Not at all. If you want to continue your travels in West Africa from Ziguinchor or Bissau, feel free. Our trips include round-trip transportation back to Dakar, but if it is more convenient for your travel situation to jump off elsewhere, simply let us know before the trip.

Is it possible to store luggage in Dakar?

Yes, we have a secure location where you can store luggage in Dakar. You will have roughly 35 litres of storage with the saddlebags that we provide with the bikes. If you want to wear a small, light backpack, you could do that as well. We wear a hydration pack ourselves, which comes in handy for storing personal items and keeping us hydrated.

Some of the itineraries mention bush camps. Do I need to bring any camping equipment?

No, we supply all of the necessary camping equipment. You won’t have to lug it around on your bike, either.

Do you cater for special dietary requirements?

Yes we do. On our regular tours we source all of our food locally on route. This will include seasonal fruits and vegetables as well as various meats, chicken and fish. If you have any special requirements then we ask that you let us know when you book. This will enable us to make a plan so you can  travel with us and not miss out on the great cuisine available in the region.

I'm a keen photographer and I will want to take my time and take lots of photos. Is this possible or will I be left behind?

Our tours are designed so that each individual can take their time and focus on their own interests. We do have a schedule but within the schedule, there is the opportunity for people to have freedom to explore.

How can I charge electrical equipment?

There will usually be charging points available at our night stops to enable you to keep a charge in your phone or camera batteries. Electricity in West Africa is 220v and in Senegal and Bissau they have the standard European 2 pin plug. In The Gambia they mostly have the British 3 pin plug. We suggest that you carry an international adaptor. A reserve battery pack for charging your phone can also come in handy. On the Coast 2 Coast expedition, every bike will have an individual 12 volt charger.

What kinds of people take these tours? I'm worried I might not fit in.

Our youngest traveller was 18 years old and our oldest was 75 (so far). We have had many nationalities and both men and women. Some people like bird watching, others like fishing, others like drinking beer and going out to clubs. But the one thing they have all had in common is a desire to experience life in Africa and to have some freedom doing it.

I am interested in the Coast to Coast trip but I would only like to do a section of it as I am short of time.

With adequate notice we can make a plan for people to join and leave in certain places on route. There are some key points that need to be discussed as we would need to be get a bike in place and also then demobilise it once you leave. Visas are also an issue. It is definitely something we can discuss so if time is an issue, drop us a line and we can see what might work.
